Guidelines on the requirements of BS EN 60439-1

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD

The Standard covers all risks arising from the use of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies, including not just electrical ones but also mechanical, and all other risks. The Standard details performance requirements for the design & construction, electrical characteristics and test specifications so that the essential safety requirements of the LV Directive are satisfied. These are summarised below:

  • Temperature-rise limits
  • Short-circuit withstand strength of main circuits
  • Short-circuit withstand strength of protective circuits
  • Mechanical operation tests
  • Wiring, electrical operation
  • Dielectric properties
  • Effectiveness of the protective circuit
  • Clearance and creepage distances
  • IP degree of protection
  • Protective measures
