Guidelines on the requirements of BS EN 60439-1
HOW TO ENSURE CONFORMITY TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE
STANDARD
In order to prove compliance with BS EN 60439-1,
the manufacturer must ensure that all the requirements
laid down in the standard are verified by:
Type tests Type tests are carried out on a sample of such an
assembly or on such parts of assemblies manufactured
to the same or similar design.
Type tests include the verification of the following:
- Temperature-rise limits
- Dielectric properties
- Short-circuit withstand strength
- Effectiveness of the protective circuit
- Clearances and creepage distances
- Mechanical operation
- Degree of protection
These tests may be carried out in any order
and/or on different samples of the same type.
If modifications are made to the components of the
assembly, new type tests have to be carried out only
in so far as such modifications are likely to adversely
affect the results of these tests.
Routine tests Routine tests are intended to detect
faults in materials and workmanship. They are carried
out on every new assembly after it has been assembled
or on each transport unit. Another routine test at the
place of installation is not required.
Routine tests include the following:
- Inspection of the assembly including inspection
of wiring and, if necessary, electrical operation
tests.
- A dielectric test.
- Checking or protective measures and of the electrical
continuity of the protective circuit.
The tests may be carried out in any order.
NOTE: The performance of the routine test at the
manufacturers works does not relieve the firm installing
the assembly of the duty of checking it after transport
and installation. The above tests have to be carried
out on an assembly classified as TTA or PTTA.
Important The standard states that "The manufacturer
shall, on request, specify the basis for the verifications"
Clients are advised to obtain documentary evidence of
all verifications and this should include as a
minimum:
- Copies of all Type test Certificates
- Copies of all Routine test reports
- Declarations of conformity
- EC Declaration of Conformity
